While Mastering Your Craft, Don’t Neglect the Business Side

Becoming the best jeweler you can be is no easy task. You’re asked to master a number of different tools and disciplines, some requiring vastly different skillsets. Gemology. Geology. Chemistry. Metalsmithing. Casting. CAD/CAM. 3D printing. The knowledge you need is both theoretical and practical. You’ve got to be good with your hands and a creative problem-solver, and you need a well-developed eye for art and sense of style. You’re part manual laborer, part high-tech technician, part fine artist. Most of us are lucky if we can master one of those skillsets in a lifetime.

It’s even harder when you’re trying to run your own business. While even the more theoretical aspects of the jeweler’s craft are grounded in the laws of physics, the laws of business can be counterintuitive and confusing, and the advice you find floating around on the internet can be contradictory or not applicable to the jewelry industry or to your business in particular.

New Approaches to Navigate Uncertainty

Add to this confusion the difficulty of thriving in business at this moment in history. We live at a time of economic instability, requiring businesses to become more resilient. Small business owners have to develop new approaches to marketing, merchandising, sales, staffing, and pricing. Even a small competitive edge in one of these areas can be transformational.

New Technologies Made Easy

We’re also in the midst of rapid technological change. Some of this new technology will be not only useful but necessary to running a successful business for many years to come, some of it not so much. How do you make those decisions when your expertise lies in making and repairing jewelry, not software?

You need a community you can trust, a community of experts who understand the jewelry business as a whole and your business in particular. That’s what we’re building with our educational initiatives at the Atlanta Jewelry Show.

RetailFusion brings together some of the brightest business minds in the jewelry industry today to deliver to you the skills you’ll need to stay competitive in an increasingly challenging economy.
