Drawing on both advanced scientific training and more than a decade of bench experience, Elizabeth will walk through the evaluation process a jeweler should follow before applying heat, pressure, or laser. The focus is not on creating fear, but on developing judgment. Attendees will examine how to assess metal condition, prior repairs, potential brittleness, hidden fractures, stone stability, and structural stress points that may not be visible at intake.

The case study will explore when instinct is enough and when additional testing is warranted. That may include careful microscopic inspection, metal identification and alloy verification, observation of solder seams and porosity, assessment of work hardening, and consideration of how light behavior in the diamond can reveal internal characteristics that affect durability.
